Work-Life Balance is a SHAM!
Every employer I've ever worked for touts "work-life balance" as one of their core values and key to their ability to attract and retain top talent. The call of work-life balance is the drumbeat of the modern knowledge worker but is it even real or possible in today's world?
I hope the answer is yes but I have my doubts that our employers are the ones really looking out for our wellbeing and further, they might not exactly understand the meaning of the word "balance" in the first place.
Tell me, how is your work and life balanced if you spend 5 days each week at work and only 2 days at home with your family? Perhaps, they're counting your time asleep as "life". Most of us who have done the office grind wake up before the sun, work until after it goes down and are too tired afterward to do anything meaningful with our life. 5 or 6 days out of each week are sucked into the black hole of 'work'.
Now, I don't see a transition to the 3 or 4-day work-week anytime soon. So, how then, are we ever to acheive real balance between life and work?
The answer, I believe, is to find high-leverage activities outside of work that are truly "recreational" (read: re-creation-al, meaning the truly recreate us into a better version of ourselves). Because we'll never spend as much time on our life as we do our work, the time we do spend on life must be spent on those activities that give us the best return on our investment (our time).
The Problem with Office Work
Office workers are burned out and for good reason. Even though the work-week only lasts 5 days, modern technology steals even more of our personal time through sneaky little time-stealers like mobile email, instant messenger and more.
Not only does the modern office worker NOT have work-life balance to begin, that imbalance is teetering even further toward work because of our modern technology. We all know instrinsically that being unable to unplug, reset and recharge is killing our prodictivity but what is the modern office worker to do?
The Solution to Office Work
Not all of us are lucky enough to quit our office job and go work on a farm but there are things we can do to make our "life" time more effective and truly re-creaction-al. Office workers around the world tout Yoga as their secret weapon for staying sane, centered and energized throughout the work week.
Floating offers a new and potentially more powerful option for the office worker looking to unplug. Booking a float session provides you a guaranteed hour with no emails, traffic, calls from the boss and nasty notes from clients. It allows your mind a much-needed break from technology and allows the body to break out of our terrible office chair posture. It allows us to leave our work/stress where it belongs: at work and NOT at home!
Take time for your life back from the office and book your float now!
